Christopher Arelt

Christopher Arelt’s architectural practice, Nautilus Architects, is defined by a collaborative and interpretive approach, ensuring that each design evolves uniquely in response to its site, context, and client vision. His work is both a continuation and a response to Modernism, embracing a return to regionalism and artistry—where every project is shaped by the “heads, hearts, and hands” of those involved. Each Nautilus home is an exploration of natural light, material authenticity, and the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, reflecting a deep reverence for craftsmanship and place.

A native of Port Jefferson, New York, Christopher earned his Master of Architecture from Yale University in 1993, following a Master of Business Administration (1987) and a Bachelor’s Degree, Magna Cum Laude (1985), from Duke University. Beyond his architectural work, he has enjoyed 30 years of marriage and is a proud father to his daughter, EmmaRose. He is often accompanied on projects b y his loyal cocker spaniels, Vincenzo and Cosmo, a testament to the warmth and personal connection he brings to his work.

As an advocate for sustainable, high-performance design, Christopher is a LEED-certified architect, recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council. His approach to sustainability is deeply site-driven, considering building orientation, topography, and environmental impact from the outset. Nautilus integrates passive cooling strategies, natural ventilation, daylight management, and energy-efficient systems, alongside the use of recycled and repurposed materials, green roof technology, and life cycle cost analysis.

Nautilus’ body of work stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful, enduring design, shaping homes that are not only architecturally distinguished but also deeply connected to the landscape and community of the Connecticut shoreline.

Sustainable design is, well, here to stay. We are proud to announce that Christopher Arelt has earned distinction as a LEED-certified designer by the U.S. Green Building Council. Our approach to sustainable design is rooted in the essential nature of the site itself, the orientation of buildings to topography/sun, minimizing construction waste, and making appropriate choices for building systems and the material palette. We integrate innovative methods of dealing with passive cooling, natural ventilation, managing daylight, energy use, recycled and repurposed materials, life cycle cost analyses and green roof technology.  Read More
