A sculptural contemporary lake house designed in harmony with its wooded surroundings, this award-recognized residence transforms a modest lakeside footprint into a refined modern retreat.

Located along a quiet Connecticut lake, this contemporary residence was designed as a dramatic counterpoint to the owners’ traditional Colonial home nearby. Working within the footprint of the original structure, Nautilus Architects reimagined the property as a modern lakeside retreat that elevates architecture into the surrounding canopy of trees.
Clad in natural materials and composed through clean abstract forms, the home balances warmth with precision. Expansive glazing, layered roof planes, and carefully framed views create a constant dialogue between interior living spaces and the surrounding landscape.
The upper-level primary suite extends into the treetops, creating an experience reminiscent of a modern treehouse — immersed in nature while maintaining a sense of serenity and privacy. Throughout the home, natural light, proportion, and materiality work together to create spaces that feel both modern and timeless.
Recognized as a finalist for Innovation in Design, the project remains a defining example of Nautilus Architects’ philosophy: contextual modern architecture inspired by place, light, and the emotional experience of home.
