Nestled within the wooded landscape of Lyme, Connecticut, this renovation and expansion was designed for a retired New York City couple seeking a quieter pace of life while maintaining strong connections to family and friends.
The project focused on transforming the primary suite into a comfortable and accessible retreat while creating a separate pool house and guest accommodations capable of welcoming extended family for longer visits. Thoughtful planning allowed the home to evolve with the owners’ changing needs while providing flexible spaces for children and grandchildren to gather, play, and create lasting memories.
Natural materials, generous glazing, and strong connections to the surrounding landscape reinforce the home’s sense of place, offering a peaceful counterpoint to urban living. The result is a timeless New England residence designed for comfort, connection, and enjoyment across generations.

High-Performance Guest House Design
A key component of the project was the design and construction of a new guest pool house intended to accommodate extended family visits, including children and grandchildren. To maximize energy efficiency, comfort, and long-term durability, the structure was constructed entirely using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).
The SIPs building system creates a highly insulated, airtight building envelope that significantly reduces energy consumption while maintaining consistent indoor temperatures throughout the year. The superior thermal performance minimizes heating and cooling demands, enhances occupant comfort, and contributes to the overall sustainability of the property.
Beyond energy efficiency, SIPs construction allowed for precise fabrication, reduced construction waste, and accelerated installation. The result is a resilient, high-performance guest retreat that seamlessly complements the main residence while providing comfortable accommodations for family and guests in every season.

Courtyard Living: Connecting Home, Workshop, and Greenhouse
The design organizes the property around a central courtyard that serves as the heart of daily life and outdoor activity. Carefully positioned to create a sense of enclosure while maintaining views of the surrounding woodland landscape, the courtyard establishes a strong connection between the residence and its supporting structures.
A custom barn workshop provides space for hobbies, craftsmanship, and storage, reflecting the owners’ desire for an active and creative lifestyle. Adjacent to the workshop, a greenhouse extends the property’s connection to nature, offering opportunities for year-round gardening, cultivation, and seasonal enjoyment.
Together, the residence, guest pool house, barn workshop, and greenhouse form a cohesive architectural composition linked by pathways, outdoor gathering spaces, and shared views. The courtyard becomes a natural gathering place for family and friends, creating a campus-like environment that encourages interaction, recreation, and connection to the landscape.
Inspired by the traditional New England farmstead, the arrangement balances practicality with beauty, creating a timeless retreat where living, working, gardening, and entertaining coexist in harmony.
