  • "Two images from a seasonal lakefront cottage combine to make an even bolder statement. This three-story building has a master suite occupying the entire third floor. The bed is centered on giant, bi-parting glass doors, and the rest of the wall is all glass as well. The proximity of the bed to the doors, and the balcony outside, create a sensation of being propelled out over the lake. On the first floor, the kitchen and living area (with associate Luigi enjoying the sun) is again linked to a large deck through bi-parting glass doors. Ipe is a common choice for decks, but here, the material flows directly inside, at the same level and using the same details, so deck and interior feel like one large space. Note too that the deck railings, constructed using thin, galvanized steel members, allow the eye to travel right through to the view beyond."

    Chris Arelt, Nautilus Architects

Located along a quiet Connecticut lake, this contemporary residence was designed as a dramatic counterpoint to the owners’ traditional Colonial home nearby. Working within the footprint of the original structure, Nautilus Architects reimagined the property as a modern lakeside retreat that elevates architecture into the surrounding canopy of trees.

Clad in natural materials and composed through clean abstract forms, the home balances warmth with precision. Expansive glazing, layered roof planes, and carefully framed views create a constant dialogue between interior living spaces and the surrounding landscape.

The upper-level primary suite extends into the treetops, creating an experience reminiscent of a modern treehouse — immersed in nature while maintaining a sense of serenity and privacy. Throughout the home, natural light, proportion, and materiality work together to create spaces that feel both modern and timeless.

Recognized as a finalist for Innovation in Design, the project remains a defining example of Nautilus Architects’ philosophy: contextual modern architecture inspired by place, light, and the emotional experience of home.
